Agenda/Synopsis:
In its recent studies, Mercer pointed out that we have already experienced around 1⁰C of average warming above preindustrial levels, and extraordinary weather events with significant financial and human consequences are increasing in frequency. Humans have never lived in a world much warmer than today; yet the current trajectory of at least 3⁰C above the preindustrial average by 2100 could put us beyond the realm of human experience sometime in the next 30 years.
In terms of financial impact, natural disasters in APAC brought about an estimated US$76 billion damage per year in the past decade, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), who also estimated that US$1.7 trillion investment on infrastructure would be required every year until 2030 in the region to maintain growth, tackle poverty and respond to climate change.
Like its growing importance in all economies around the world, sustainable development is a key strategic priority in the Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). This is where Hong Kong, as an international financial centre, can leverage our unique advantages as a prominent green and sustainable finance hub for the GBA, the APAC region and beyond.
Topics covered in this session organised by the FSDC include:
• Local, regional, and global perspectives of sustainable development
• Opportunities and challenges presented to businesses in Hong Kong and other GBA cities
• The role of Hong Kong in sustainable development
